I feel I should mention that roger is an expert on the Thames Estuary. He has written a really informative book on the Estuary and how to passage plan a route across it. Anyone who sails or intends to sail in the Estuary should read it; its called Crossing the Thames Estuary by Roger Gasper and is published by Imray, the charts people.

One more possibility I should have mentioned, the card reader or something associated with it could be a problem but that would be very unusual. You can rule that out by checking it reads a chart.

Usually when an update is not recognised it is an incorrect version although, of course, it may be something wrong with the SD card or with the files on it. Are you certain that you haven’t got a Mk1 708? Mk2 versions have a serial number beginning 2 e.g KP708219etc will be a mk2 produced in 2019. What update did you load to your SD card and what is your serial number.

Baud rate can be changed. From the satellite screen press menu, baud rate can be selected from 4800 to 38400.

Is your NAVDATA NMEA0183 compatible? Raymarine use their own version of data, SeaTalk, which is not directly compatible with NMEA but there are converters available.

    NMEA sentences, I usually select:

    APA
    APB
    RMB
    VTG
    XTE
    BOD

These usually work with auto pilots.

Connections are usually the problem and if still no good, you should refer to your 708A manual for the correct NMEA out connections. One other possibility, if you are sharing the NMEA output with anything else you may be dragging the data signal down. Only one device should be connected to your 708A NMEA output – use an NMEA distribution box if this is the problem.

Are you sure it isn’t an antenna problem as in most cases poor reception/transmission is down to the antenna and I have never had a case of poor reception on a 1299A that wasn’t the antenna. I would suggest trying a different antenna – if you have a friend with AIS – try your 1299 on his boat. If your 1299 is indeed low sensitivity then a new AIS module would be the answer but you say it is old and the AIS units are not cheap so you may be better to just treat yourself to a new 1299A. You don’t say how old your 1299 is but the version3 is much slicker than the Mk2 1299 and the Mk1 1299 is – well its very old!
